[This is an archive post about the first version of Avoyd which we now call Avoyd 1999. The full game is now free to download.]
We've released the full version of Avoyd 1.5 alpha 1, which is available from the downloads section of the member pages. Be sure to download the correct version, as we've left V1.4 up in case people have problems with 1.5 alpha 1. This version is not as significant an update as 1.4, but adds a few nice elements which make the game a better experience.
Other big news, bigger in fact than the new version, is that Planet Avoyd is up and running. Planet Avoyd is a fan site for Avoyd, independently run, and we'll be supporting the site with exclusive information and perhaps a few extra surprises in the future. One day you'll be able to tell your grandchildren you knew about Avoyd before it became famous... If only.
As registered developers for ATI, Matrox, NVIDIA, and PowerVR (relax lads, it's in alphabetic order) we're keen to get Avoyd working well on their graphics cards, and have received great assistance from them all. My thanks to the developer relations at all these companies.
As readers of the forum will note, my main machine had a hard disk problem which now seems sorted. I've got backups, and most of the disk was readable, so recovered everything. However, it's tough work putting a Windows system back together. Although Linux can have its user-unfriendliness, one great thing about it is that there is a better differentiation between user and system information. Hopefully Microsoft will one day opt for user directories. Another issue I have is that it's tricky getting hold of updates, and you can't easily store them if you use the automatic update tool. On a modem connection which regularly stops during downloads this is quite a pain.
